A shopping guide for the version of you that doesn’t want to spend a Saturday flashing SD cards — with a nod to the version that does.

There’s a specific kind of pride that comes from getting a Raspberry Pi and a SATA HAT to talk to each other correctly on the first try. I’ve felt it. It’s real, and nothing a pre-built box does will replicate it exactly. But that pride has a cost measured in hours, and not everyone wants to spend them on fstab syntax.

This is the other side of that build log — the one where you skip the ribbon cable, skip the UUID lookups, and just want a disk with an IP address by dinner time. Both paths lead to the same destination. They just take very different roads to get there.

What a closed box actually buys you

The honest answer: time, and a support number to call when something breaks. A Synology or Asustor unit ships with an operating system already tuned for the hardware underneath it — DSM or ADM handle disk formatting, share creation, user permissions and firmware updates through a browser interface, no terminal required. The trade-off is the one you’d expect. You’re inside someone else’s ecosystem now, and the moment you want to do something the interface wasn’t designed for, you’ll feel the walls.

My preference, when a project doesn’t need to be a learning exercise, is honestly to just buy the box. Not every weekend needs to be a lesson in Linux permissions.

What’s actually worth buying right now

Prices move constantly on these, so treat this as a snapshot rather than gospel, but a few models stand out for the right reasons — not the highest spec, just the best ratio of price, reliability, and review volume.

The Synology DS220j sits around €200 with over 2,200 reviews at 4.6 stars — that review count matters more than the star rating itself, honestly, because it means the failure modes are well documented by now. If your use case is genuinely just “one disk, on the network, shared with the household,” the single-bay Synology DS124 at roughly €166 is the leaner option, and it’s the closest packaged equivalent to what the original ask in this whole conversation was — a disk with its own IP, nothing more.

For something newer, the UGREEN NASync DH2300 — around €230, RK3576 8-core, 4GB LPDDR4X — is worth a mention. UGREEN is not an established NAS brand the way Synology is, but the hardware spec at that price is aggressive, and over 1,000 reviews already, with more than a hundred units sold in the last month alone according to the listing. Whether that reputation holds up over a five-year duty cycle the way Synology’s has is, frankly, not something anyone can answer yet.

The Asustor Drivestor 2 Gen 2 AS1202T, around €192, rounds out the shortlist as the direct Synology alternative — same category, similar interface philosophy, generally a notch cheaper across its lineup.

Diskless, and why that number on the box is misleading

Every one of these prices is for an empty enclosure. Senza dischi, as the listings say — no drives included. Budget separately for storage, and budget for NAS-rated drives specifically if the unit will run continuously; desktop drives aren’t built for 24/7 spin time, and using them anyway is a common way to shorten a NAS’s useful life without realizing why.

Where the Pi build still wins

Cost, if you already own bare drives — a Pi 5 and a SATA HAT lands well under any of the boxed options above once you factor in that you’re not buying an enclosure for storage you already have sitting in a drawer. And control. Nobody at a corporate office decides when your Raspberry Pi gets a mandatory firmware update that changes a menu you liked.

It also, and this is not a small thing, teaches you something. You come out the other side understanding what a filesystem UUID is, why Samba needs its own password separate from the system login, why mkfs.ext4 deserves a second look before you hit enter. A closed NAS teaches you none of that — which is precisely its appeal to someone who doesn’t want a lesson, just a working share.

So, which one

If the disk is a means to an end — backups, media, shared files, nothing more — buy the box. The DS220j or the DS124, depending on how many bays you actually need, will outlast the decision-making time you’d spend comparing SATA HATs online.

If the process is part of the appeal — and for some of us, it always is — the Pi 5 build from the previous piece is still sitting there, ribbon cable and all, waiting for a free evening. Whether that evening is well spent is not really a technical question. It’s a temperament one.
